SKENE HOUSE HOTELSUITES: WEEKEND THEATRE AND CULTURE BREAKS

A weekend of classical music and opera
Thursday 27 to Saturday 29 March 2008

Thursday 27th March: La Traviata  Sung in Italian with English surtitles

La Traviata, “the love story that gripped Paris”, performed by the Ukrainian National Opera of Odessa at His Majesty’s Theatre.  A spectacular traditional production brought from one of the loveliest opera houses in Europe, with handpicked soloists, highly praised chorus and full orchestra.  Based on a true story, it tells of the passionate and consumptive Violetta.  This magnificent production boasts sumptuous sets and costumes.

Friday 28th March: BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra

The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and its popular guest Vassily Sinaisky, the outstanding Russian conductor, will be performing at the Music Hall.  Sinaisky will conduct Berlioz’s Overture, Le Corsaire and Walton's passionate First Symphony and Beethoven's supreme Violin Concerto which will be played by James Ehnes.

Saturday 29th March: Madama Butterfly Sung in Italian with English surtitles

Ellen Kent & Opera International presents the Ukrainian National Opera of Odessa in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly at His Majesty’s Theatre.

Madama Butterfly boasts exquisite sets, including a spectacular Japanese garden and fabulous costumes including antique wedding kimonos from Japan.  One of the world’s most popular operas, Puccini’s Madama Butterfly tells the heart-breaking story of the beautiful young Japanese girl who falls in love with an American naval lieutenant.

P.S.  The character of Lt. Pinkerton was based on an Aberdonian called Thomas Blake Glover!  Referred to as The Scottish Samuri, Glover is considered one of the founding fathers of Japanese economic success.  You can visit his family home, Glover House, recently restored to its former Victorian splendour.

Behind the scenes at the theatre

The A-listed Edwardian Theatre on Rosemount Viaduct, just down the road from Skene House Rosemount, was designed by the famous theatre architect Frank Matcham.  Find out where the magic begins on a behind the scenes tour.  We would be delighted to book your place on the tour or alternatively contact them direct.
