In Aberdeenshire you can barely turn a corner without coming across a castle of some description. There are over 300 to visit, from regal residences to dramatic ruins perched on clifftops. Many are steeped in history. Dunnottar was fought over by Wallace and Cromwell, and Franco Zeffirelli's set his 1991 film Hamlet here. Others have inspired writers - Slains is said to be the model for Bram Stoker's Dracula's castle.
Visit as many as you can and make them part of your holiday story.
