Hana Hradecka – Receptionist, Skene House Rosemount

Student Placement Profile

Since her first trip to the U.S when she was 16 years old, Hana Hradecka has been passionate about international travel. Some years later, International Tourism Management student Hana has been employed at Skene House HotelSuites for 2 ½ years, starting out as a housemaid and waitress at Skene House Whitehall on a part-time basis before progressing to a full-time placement student role on the reception of Skene House Rosemount.

Like many of our employees, Hana spent 6 months studying abroad (Cyprus) as part of her Erasmus year degree course with Robert Gordon University Aberdeen. During this year, Hana gained valuable sales and leadership skills through a combination of part-time work and an Erasmus Ambassador role; skills which have proved very useful on the front desk of Skene House Rosemount.

Reflecting on her one year placement with Skene House HotelSuites, Hana explains that front desk experience has given her the transferable skills in preparation for continuing her University studies to masters level and created many more career opportunities within tourism. Hana’s top tip for anyone wishing to enter the hospitality industry is simply to get as much work experience as possible and build your language skills. Whilst Hana values her university studies, she explains that every front desk works differently and often a text book or lecture cannot prepare you for some of the situations you may be faced with on a real hotel reception desk.

Investment in employee learning and development is paramount at Skene House HotelSuites and Hana is a prime example of how ambitious and motivated students can get ahead in the workplace. All foreign language employees are offered English language classes to help them with their customer service skills and full integration into the organisation. Hana, originating from the Czech Republic, explains that the English classes offered by Skene House HotelSuites has boosted her confidence when dealing with customers, answering the telephone and sending written correspondence.

Hana enjoys working in the largest and busiest of the three Skene House HotelSuites. Here she has had the freedom to use her initiative and make decisions and sometimes learn from mistakes under the guidance of an experienced manager. As a student Hana didn’t feel that she was ever ‘thrown in at the deep-end’ rather her training and development has been timely and progressive, starting with observing and learning by doing but always with another more experienced member of the team to consult.

After 2 ½ years at Skene House HotelSuites, we are pleased that Hana will continue working full-time with us over the summer before returning to her studies in September. When asked about her future aspirations, Hana said that she would like to finish her Masters in Edinburgh and possibly move to Germany to improve her language skills or maybe even New Zealand!
